NIOS BOARD

In 1986, the National Education Policy made a concerted effort to strengthen the open school system, aiming to gradually provide open learning facilities at the secondary level across the country through the NIOS board. This was an independent system with its own curriculum and periodic examinations for separate certification.

The NIOS board is a government-recognized education board in India that provides education through open and distance learning. It allows students to complete their 10th and 12th grades in a flexible manner.

According to the Government of India, NIOS is a board that provides timely education to students in remote areas. Under this initiative, the Ministry of Education of India established the National Open School in November 1989.

This is a helpful overview of how NIOS has evolved from a CBSE project into a fully independent board focused on flexible learning. It’s interesting to see how the system was designed to support students in remote areas long before online education became mainstream. I’d love to see more examples of how students today are using NIOS to tailor their learning paths.
